A Poem for You

Story 7/40 in The Forty Weeks Challenge

I’ve spent a lifetime with you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I dreamt of you from the start
A shining light in my life
I was in awe at your first steps
And in shock at your first words
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We’ve argued and disagreed

I taught you to respect

And watched you grow in maturity

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've debated and discussed
The things that would shape you as a man
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was there for all your biggest moments

The little ones too

We celebrated the smallest successes

I knew how much they mattered to you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve seen the man you become
A father couldn’t be more proud
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I know your fears and worries

We spoke about the things that hurt you

I praised your confidence

And the calmness that was passed on to you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve seen your family life
A life you led well
And I couldn’t be more proud
Of the son, I'm soon to have
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On my deathbed, you cried joyful tears for me

You knew the fulfilling and prosperous life I lived

Even from elsewhere, I watched you love life just the same

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Son, you’re not even here yet
And I’ve spent a lifetime with you
Each and every dream
Is another glimpse into the life of you
The inspiration behind this poem came from various dreams that I've had centered around my son who is due in June. Before we knew about the pregnancy I had a dream about him. Then I dreamt about him being a boy and started seeing him at various stages in his life in subsequent dreams.
    Congratulations on your bundle of joy. You’re going to be an amazing father. The first few weeks maybe challenging but do what's best for you and your family, and block out what others tell you. Also, seek help if you need it and know that you and your woman aren't alone!
  • Congratulations Darnell on the impending birth if your son. You have written a wonderful poem to commemorate the event.
