When the sun forgets to show her glorious smile,

When the dark clouds hover over his head,

When his nightmares scream within the daylight hours,

When he struggles to rise from his morning bed,

He smiles.

**

He knows it is these dark days that mould his strength,

Aware it is because of the dark that he gets to know the light,

Realising to hate is to appreciate his love,

To surrender is to build upon his greatest fight,

He wins.

**

His frown is hidden behind his public persona,

Gifted only to the very trustworthy few,

The accessories he carries within his heart to ward his fears,

Locked tight from the general masses view,

He pulsates.

**

He’s a force to be reckoned with if anger is your game,

You’ll learn the very definition of playing with fire,

Riling the beast that slumbers deep within,

Will lengthen his displeasure and force through his ire,

He explodes.

**

Although he harbours a heart that freely bleeds,

He’ll honour the one with a love especially grand,

Worshipping the ground she wanders within the scent of roses,

Offering her his lifetime hand,

He adores.

**

When he sleeps upon his demons and their relentless nightmares,

He builds resilience and confidence in the man he becomes,

Standing tall he wields his pride in disarray,

To the once immature little boy he now succumbs,

He grows.

**

As he ages to perfection like a fine wine,

The creases upon his skin adorn him with wisdom; ancient grace,

His greying hair highlights the battles he’s won,

And the ravishes of life highlight his handsome face,

He survives.

**

As the years pass until he nears the end,

He ponders his memories to remove any regret,

He wallows in the beauty of a life well lived,

And lays down a death we’ll never forget,

He dies.

**

His ghost lives on within the hearts of those he loved,

Friends, family, acquaintances, the random stranger,

Remembered well for his heart, his courage, his wisdom,

Forever known as a gifted life changer,

He endures.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Oh no, I wasn't expecting that he would die. He would always be remembered
