Creator Spotlight: Alexis Montoya
Meet the face behind The Bronx Vegan, a movement rooted in a conscious effort to make mindful lifestyles more accessible. Alexis Montoya is a native Bronxite with Peruvian and Puerto Rican roots, and she's been creating on Vocal for a year and a half now as she navigates a city and a cultural background in which veganism is less than traditional. Alexis shares how she manages to live as a vegan without sacrificing joy or culture in a borough where the chopped cheese reigns supreme. We sat down with Alexis to get to know her, and The Bronx Vegan, a little better, and here's what she had to say.

So, we decided to sit down with her and get to know her better—and we can't wait for you to get to know her, too.

Maybe you're one of the lucky ones who got to honeymoon in Bali or spend a year teaching in South Korea. Maybe you moved to Japan for a few years on a whim and immersed yourself in food and language and culture; or maybe you're only familiar with the wonders of the far East from idealized, Orientalized stories, or binge watching Anthony Bourdain eat too many noodles and Jollibee (RIP).

One year ago, Vocal ran a contest in partnership with O.school for creators to share their terrible, horrible, no good, very bad date stories. The result was overwhelming, and very funny. The contest saw hundreds of submissions, nearly 200 of which were published, and all of which were absolute nightmares.

K-pop is less of a music genre and more of a cultural phenomenon. Being a fan is an identifier, connecting people in the way that being a fan of the same sports team brings people together. It's an insanely eager community where members absolutely dedicate themselves to supporting their artist of choice.

Okay, I'll say it. Marie Kondo has changed my life. Or, at least, she's changed my life for the next two or three weeks until I inevitably sink back into my old, quicksand-y habits of throwing things on the floor and promising myself that I'll deal with them later, or deep-cleaning my apartment every weekend and then getting so stressed out about the state it's in by Friday night that I'm near-tears and ready to rip out my hair one strand at a time, asking myself if each individual piece sparks joy. Happy January, everyone.

As a creator, it’s important for you to be consistent, but it can be particularly hard to create on-demand. We all know that inspiration doesn’t strike on a schedule, and creativity can wither away just when you need it the most. Still, you need captivating stories that are fresh and engaging so you can attract—and keep—readers.

We say it at the end of every year, but this time I think we all really mean it: 2018 was the longest year in history. We all had the shared experience of trying to find joy in little things while the world collectively coped with political division, social shifts, mass tragedies, and the unexpected losses of so many of our personal heroes.
Vocal Curation TeamPublished 5 years ago in ResourcesWhy All Creators Should Be Storytelling
Creators come in all shapes and sizes—podcasters, novelists, poets, musicians, artists, enthusiasts, vloggers, and more—but we all have one thing in common: we have stories to share with the world.

This past year has been a particularly eventful one in hip hop. We were graced with the Drake/Pusha T Adonis feud, we witnessed the astronomic rise of Soundcloud rap, we reeled from Mac Miller's unexpected death, and we saw Kanye and Lil Pump emulate Flat Stanley in that one very disturbing music video. And through it all, we watched as time and again hip hop releases dominated the Top 40. Cardi B and Drake were deservedly everywhere, and to be honest I could've had all music besides ASTROWORLD and Sr3mm confiscated for the entire year and still been perfectly content.
