The protagonist, who is a girl from a small town called "Bakht Khan," decides to leave her city and stay in a prestigious hostel after she gets admitted to a college. His mother and father are supportive of girls' education, so they allow him to stay in the hostel.

Abu, the supervisor of the hostel, introduces the protagonist to a girl named Layla, who is also studying at the same college. Laila is a normal skinny girl of the protagonist's age, but she does not smile in response to his excitement. Madam Nafisa advises the protagonist to make friends quickly to avoid boredom and miss their family.

The protagonist falls in love with the hostel but doesn't have any special conversations with Laila. On one weekend, the protagonist asks Laila why she is asking him, and she replies that she doesn't want to tell him. The protagonist is struggling with his studies and struggles to pass tests, which leads him to think about taking tuition.

Meanwhile, the protagonist's mother explains that his father's salary does not allow for more expenses, including college fees, hostel rent, and mess bill. He has two younger siblings who also go to school, so he must work hard alone or take help from a girl.

After Amy's long lecture, there is no room left for discussion, and the protagonist is struggling to understand the lessons taught by the college teachers. He is confused about which girl to help and wonders why his roommate is not tolerant to talk.

On the second day, Madam Nafisa asks the protagonist to change his roommate or room, but the protagonist refuses, stating that it has been weeks since he shared a room with another guy. Madam Nafisa is surprised by this, as she believes the protagonist no longer wants to be with the unwanted roommate.

The story revolves around Sania, a student who is struggling with her roommate Laila, who is from a conservative family and is not allowed to go outside of the house. She is also against friendship between girls. Sania's grandmother, who is a Muslim, advises her to focus on studying and not to talk or develop friendships.

Sania's roommate, Laila, is a girl who belongs to a strict family that prohibits girls from going outside of the house. Her father has strict instructions that Laila should never be allowed outside of college, which is why she doesn't talk too much. Sania insists on being moved to a room, but Laila leaves without helping him.

The next few days are more difficult as studying in college becomes more difficult. Laila's cold demeanor remains the same. Sania asks his grandmother for help, and she tells him that when there is no way out, they ask Allah for help. She suggests reading the prayer and reciting Ayat al-Kursi to open the mind.

Sania offers the Isha prayer and goes to his room to read, but he cannot remember a single word. He turns off the lights and a side lamp comes on, which is the rule of the hostel. The students who had to study were lamp Jalalites.

As he reads, he notices a strange servant reading Ayat al-Kursi in the dim light of the lamp. His tongue, not his heart, is reciting the lesson. His eyes close, and he begins to recite the lesson with full concentration.

In the quiet room, a voice hits Sania's ears, like someone moaning. She appears to be sitting on her bed, like she is in the middle of praying. Sania runs out screaming like a madman, saying he will not stay with Laila anymore.

Madam Nafisa offers to try to get Sania another room, but Sania refuses. She then tells Laila that it was a trick of her eyes, and she entered Madam Nafisa's office.

Laila admits to having epileptic seizures and opens up about himself for the first time in a long time. She explains that her home environment is very strict, and women are kept so tight and suppressed that girls in their family cannot even stay there for a day.

Tears are shining in Laila's eyes, and Sania and Madam Nafeesa like mouths.
