My Review of "The Fall Guy"

An attempt at this generation's Tropic Thunder?

The Fall Guy is a fun action romantic comedy that just came out in 2024. Its concept is relatively simple but there's a lot of fun in the background with this movie. When I first saw the trailer for this movie it looked like a really fun romp and technically I think it starts this summer's blockbuster movies.

The movie starts out with a little narration from our hero, Colt. He's a pretty confident and well accomplished stunt man. At the beginning, it looks like he's living his best life where he's with the love of his life and he's on top of his game. Although his work is quite dangerous he seems to really love it. Nothing could go wrong but then again we can't have a movie if nothing goes wrong.

Colt happens to be a stuntman for one of the biggest Hollywood action stars in the world, Tom. It seems as though Tom is your stereotypical narcissistic leading man. He's just a terrible person but that's part of the fun in this movie. Although Colt hates Tom they are joined at the hip because he's his stuntman.

All of this goes awry when there's a terrible accident on set that traumatically injures Colt. As a result, Colt goes through a year or two of depression and finds himself out of the job. He ends up parking cars as a valet but all that is about to change when he gets a call from Tom's producer Gail.

Gail lets him know that he's wanted as a stuntman again. His ex is now the director of that new film. Still having feelings for his ex Colt decides to pursue the gig to regain the trust of his lost love. When he gets to the film he realizes that there's more to this gig than meets the eye.

Tom seems to be missing and this movie can't go on without him. Colt's mission is to find Tom and bring him back so that the film doesn't go down in flames all while rekindling his love for his ex, Jody.

This movie really is a love letter to the background work of big blockbuster movies. It puts practical stunt work at the forefront of the movie. That's why this movie really should be seen in the theatres. There's so much action and with really great visuals to add to this excitement. It's a very fun roller-coaster ride of thrills.

There are a ton of jokes in this movie as well. Not everyone will understand some of these jokes though. You kind of have to have a good movie vocabulary to appreciate what they're talking about. There's tons of references to movies of the past and can probably feel at times like you're in on an inside joke. This movie basically satirizes a lot of the movie industry as well.

That's why I make the comparisons with Tropic Thunder. That movie I loved and in some ways I liked this movie for the same reasons. Though I don't think they really satirized the industry enough to hit the heights of Tropic Thunder. There were a ton of very clever ideas added to this movie to make it stand out on its own. For one thing, they were able to play on more modern situations. They're also self aware of what it is and make fun of the creation of the movie altogether.

Overall, this is a fun time but I think you'll have an even better time watching this one in the theatres than waiting for it at home. The big sound and big screen really lend itself well with this movie. You'll lose an element of excitement without this. The audience reactions are also a nice added touch. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. There are certain pacing issues sprinkled throughout this movie that could have been ironed out.
