The charm of the Hope Diamond, which has the mysterious bluish hue and fairy-tale history, cannot be overstated. But, despite the intertwining of its beauty with the curse of the Hope Diamond, which is darkened with mysteries. However, the question is coming up with the place where the story begins from and the fact whether it is true or just myth and exaggeration made by people.

The story of the Hope Diamond begins in the 17th century when an immensely big blue diamond is dug out of an Indian mine, which easily surpasses the current Hope Diamond in size. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, a French broker highly regarded for his gemstone knowledge, got this diamond on his visit to India. This famous stone was once called the Tavernier Blue as it was said to have come off of a Hindu goddess statue and that's how Tavernier managed to lay his hands on it, setting off the curse.

According to the legend, the same fate trapped Tavernier after he had got the diamond and then eventually he died by the cruel hands of the wolves or wild dogs during his third travel to India. The element of the curse supposedly did not diminish King Louis XIV of France, who chopped the stone again and finally died of gangrene. The same kind of fortunes occurred to those who were better and worse off because of the diamond, like Fouquet who was imprisoned following his wearing of it and the Marie Antoinette who was decapitated at the guillotine.

From the beginning of the diamond history till today it was located in different people's hands, but the path it passed was full of suffering. Entrepreneurs went bankrupt, had the diseases or died at the wrong time, which provoked the assumption that the rock bears something evil in it. At the same time, however, skepticism appears when exploring the historical truthfulness of these legends. In many cases the claimed woes lack believable proof and so dispense of the validity of the curse.

Along with its dark aura, the name of the Hope Diamond has its roots in the history of Henry Philip Hope, the heir to the famous Hope & Co. banking house, who also had it in his fortune in the middle of 19th century. The successive possessing of mines, including Evalyn Walsh McLean, grew into part of the Armenian's legend. The stone of curse made McLean perform criminal activities which involved financial troubles and the end of his life on self-destruction which went further spreading the tale.

In the mist of a stage of uncertainties, experts have attempted to refute Koh-I-Noor's legends. While writing on my behalf the curator of the Smithsonian Museum for example, Jeffrey Post, an architect has stated that he doesn’t believe in the curse that is related to the Hope Diamond. Tavernier, for example, got to the age of extremeness, only he had a calm death like normal people. Similarly Antoinett as Marie never wore the diamond and this was one of the reasons to question any chance to her curse fate.

However, even attempts to devolve the myth, media content and cinema still put emphasis on the sheen of the myth. Just like the Sancy and the Black Orlov, are also cursed diamonds which make the story of the Hope Diamond filled with imagination, mixing facts with fiction in an interstrying weave of intrigue. Although the mystery about the curse is never well-explained, the long-lasting legacy carved for the Hope Diamond in history as a symbol of beauty, mystery, and human dignance will make it a pride of possession for generations to pass.

The story of the Hope Diamond is symbolic of how “human nature’s continuing longing for mystery” leads us on a perpetual quest to unlock what is unknown. The extent to which the diamond's curse is a historical phenomenon or just a tale of legends is often overlooked but, either ways, it is a mysterious topic which teaches us that "belief" is a powerful force and there is not a single mystery in this world that is not alluring. As the diamond stays fascinating generation after generation precisely because of its brilliance, it will remain while the tale of its curse will endure forever, a testament of slap between beauty, superstition and human fantasy.
