At the Table
Vocal Community Microfiction Series - Swamp
Amber crossed her arms when Nana brought out the apple pie.
"You know this dessert is racist, right?"
Stifled groans of disbelief rose around the table. Amber smirked.
"Every ingredient - from the apples that were picked, to the sugar that is used - can be traced back to colonialism and the systematic genocide that white men inflicted upon the indigenous populations here and around the world. Effects that are still felt today."
To which Nana replied, "I'm sure the kids in Cambodia got a full ride to college after making your shirt."

Lol Nana is right! Sit down and eat your pie 🥧
Bam! Sit down, kid.
Nana wasn't playing. She said, "Look honey, You can get off Your high horse once You learn some practical skills and start making everything for Yourself. That means Your clothes, Your food, and the flipping roof over Your head. But 'Oh no,' You'll still be living on land fought over and taken from somebody else, cause there's always been a finite amount of land and resources to go around that we've always fought over. Now You just have to fight for it with money instead of with guns, germs, and steel. If You don't like this apple pie, You don't have to eat a single bite of it." Fantastic work as always, Loryne.
Yes yes a thousand times yes. Having spent years working in a multitude of African countries, I only wish more people traveled and had the worldly experience to realize their lives are not at all worth complaining about. "Where there is no suffering, they will find it to be made."
Really good point here; I love the message 🥹❤️
Oooo, Nana's got game!
Touche!
Hah, the understanding readers walk away with - of the family, of the nana, of the bitterness that erupts when we try to inform by guilting - is all very succinct and well-expressed. I love the ease with which you set a scene.
I see your message here, and I agree with it
