Dear mother-to-be,

I wanted to let you know how very, very special I think you are. I don't think there can be any job that is more meaningful than the one you are about to begin, that of being a mom. You are the most important person in the world to your precious unborn baby, and you will be for many years.

People will paint you a picture of motherhood in rainbows, and you will forget that rain comes first. The brightness of that rainbow will always outshine the gray, but it's okay to talk about gray, you should.

You will rise in the dead of the night, time after time. It will hurt, your bones will ache. You'll swear across pillowcases as to whose turn it is to get up. When this happens, you'll think of your mother. You'll have a newfound respect for every mother or father climbing the same mountain. You'll fall but will keep climbing.

You will question your identity, you'll miss her. But maybe no one told you the pieces of the puzzle go back together from the inside out. You'll wonder if you're doing everything right, you'll panic, second guess, google search, you'll wonder if you have enough for your baby.

Your baby will have you, you will be enough.

You will cry, your baby will cry. Some evenings as a hush finally falls over your mess-ridden house, the sound will be ringing in your ears. But you will also laugh 'till you cry.

There's so much to look forward to.

You'll be busy yet also feel as if you're achieving nothing. You will be achieving everything at that precious moment. Those washing piles? You'll be folding those tiny clothes away into storage soon, sooner than you realize. I'm not saying to enjoy every moment, you won't, but these moments do pass.

Don't wish for it too much.

Some days will be a lucky dip with the mood in the house. Don't try and do everything the same as the day before so they have that long lunch nap.

You will have good days and bad days. That's normal.

You will have days where you'll feel depleted from all the giving. Try to fill your cup and not just everyone else's. That won't make you selfish, it will make you a better mother. You might think some days you can't do this. That it seems impossible.

But you can

You are

With each season comes change

It won't be easy

But it will be so, so worth it

You are INCREDIBLE,

Enjoy and embrace every coming moment ahead.

Be easy and kind to yourself.

And most of all, you are AMAZING

Best wishes.

I love this letter SO much. I cried. And I'm not even pregnant. But I am a mom. I've given birth to two beautiful babies, one boy, and one girl. And I've adopted my beautiful perfect little niece. My life is full of so much joy. But there's a lot of tiredness and stress too. This letter is so spot on, and so real. And I think it's wonderful and I hope every new mom in the world gets to read this... because it's real. It's not the fluffy "omg your life is gonna be perfect" spiel that people give when people are expecting. It's REAL. And it's sound advice. And I love that you remind us to fill our own cup and take time for ourselves too, and you mention it makes you a better mother. This is something most new moms are not told - and so they don't know that it's okay to take time for themselves. This piece - was pure gold worth your weight.Thank you for this. Thank you so much.

  • It's always okay to talk about the gray and rain before the rainbow. And it's very important too because to some women, they cannot handle that gray and rain or may not even want to. I'm one of those women. Pieces like this helps raise awareness and helps prevent children from having irresponsible parents.

Motherhood is the biggest blessing a woman can hope for. No, it isn't easy. You worry constantly. But when that baby, toddler, teen, adult wraps his / her arms around you and says, "I love you, Mom", it's worth all the worry in the world. GREAT story.

Motherhood - it's a mixed bag. Hardest thing I've ever done but wouldn't be without my boys. Love them so, so much.

Then there are the single mother vibes, the working mother vibes, the post-partum vibes, the accidental vibes, the many vibes that are not mentionable, and the after they start growing up vibes, the teenage vibes. Yep. You will have to be strong, there is no 'how to' book. Enjoy the ride however it comes to you. Mother mother mother. Nothing else compares. Great one C.
