Highland Lad Shanty

I am a fan of Nathan Evans. The Rising of Glasgow was originally written in Scottish English for my oral exam, so I wanted to write something in Scots again.

Oh, come gather 'round, ye hearty crew,

And listen close tae a tale that's true,

Of a lad from the Highlands, bold and free,

Whose heart belonged tae the deep blue sea.

.

He wiz a Highland lad, with a love so true,

Sailing the waves, with a bold and brave crew,

With a twinkle in his eye and a smile so bright,

He found his joy in the starry night.

.

His kilt wiz plaid of the finest thread,

And he wore it proud, as he sailed ahead,

With salt on his lips and wind in his hair,

He'd sing of love wi’oot a care.

.

He wiz a Highland lad, with a love so true,

Sailing the waves, with a bold and brave crew,

With a twinkle in his eye and a smile so bright,

He found his joy in the starry night.

.

His heart wiz drawn tae a lad on board,

With eyes like embers, a heart unexplored,

In secret glances, their love did bloom,

Amidst the waves and the salty fume.

.

He wiz a Highland lad, with a love so true,

Sailing the waves, with a bold and brave crew,

With a twinkle in his eye and a smile so bright,

He found his joy in the starry night.

.

Though some may scorn and some may jest,

Their love wiz true, and stood the test,

Fur love knows naw the bounds of land,

But sails the seas, hand in hand.

.

He wiz a Highland lad, with a love so true,

Sailing the waves, with a bold and brave crew,

With a twinkle in his eye and a smile so bright,

He found his joy in the starry night.

"With a twinkle in his eye and a smile so bright" that's so emotional and I also feel happiness inside me after reading this amazing

  • I really enjoyed this Christian!!! You did such an excellent job with this. The line "In secret glances, their love did bloom" as in so many circumstances unfortunately a love like this is forbidden but it cannot be hidden and it will bloom no matter the circumstances. You are a really good writer. I will be reading more of your works!!!

So fun in all the best ways! Also, thank you for bringing my attention to Nathan Evans. I've given his music a listen and I'm hooked, too. So goooood!

  • First of all, how you wrote this is just so brilliant and unique. Even if one isn’t familiar with Scottish voice, you could still clearly understand. Second, CUTE. Third, love it.
