Didn’t I want to be that starlet in some cowboy’s eyes?

Didn’t I want to be that wife on the range, hanging my clothes on the line, canning everything from my garden, and culling my own chickens?

Didn’t I want to be that wife who wore boots, jeans, and worked hard keeping our home?

Didn’t I want to raise little cowboys and cowgirls who knew how to ride and farm, and mend a fence?

Didn’t I want to have family dinners and big holiday gatherings?

Didn’t I want to be the matriarch, taking my place behind my own momma?

Didn’t I weep over knowing there was more past the horizon, and the pulling toward my country roots?

Didn’t I walk barefoot on the hot sand road and feel the wind wrap itself around and through my very soul?

Didn’t I want something simple? Natural?

Didn’t I want to be of the earth and not just on it?

Didn’t I?
