Our salt-licked legs straddled the boards until we felt the pull of the ocean beckoning us to ride. We followed one last curl of the sea into the shore.

I watched her as she caught her breath. The brown waves of her hair were taken by the wind, but it was her eyes that sucked me in. I had never met a freer soul. I wanted to take in the world with her, experience parenthood, forever savor the view of those wild eyes. I wanted it all. But I didn’t say so.

Instead, I asked,

“Will you marry me?”
